about

Recorded direct to 2-track tape in 2008.
Mastered Jan / Feb 2023

Initially released digitally shortly after recording but withdrawn due to incorrect crediting of performers on Tunecore, which made it appear that Vinson, Penman and Cox were co-leaders with Waldman.
In fact it was purely Dan's session & tunes (apart from Voyage).

He and Penman had met at Berklee in the early 90s, and it was through Matt that Dan and Will Vinson became acquainted, shortly before making this recording.
Like Dan, Bruce Cox had been hanging late in West Village and his deep groove and sound was the obvious choice when it came to putting the date together - thankfully he too could make the session.

The group had actually never played together - Cox hadn't met Vinson or Penman before - but as you can hear the musical rapport was instantaneous, resulting in an album of practically all first takes.
Cox's experience playing with funk legends the JBs makes for an dynamic blend when combined with two of the foremost contemporary jazz performers on the New York scene, drawing unique performances all round.

Waldman himself had come to NYC from London shortly before making this album, partly on the advice of Penman. He'd been performing in the sphere of nu-soul and broken beat with another Kiwi, producer / keyboardist Mark de Clive Lowe, and had music released on the Acid Jazz label, but ultimately couldn't resist the opportunity of developing his jazz playing on the heavy NYC scene.

Following being reluctantly withdrawn, the tracks sat in the can for over a decade while other projects took the focus, including Dan's 2020 release "Sources & Angles", recorded in NYC 2011/12, also featuring Vinson, but have emerged again once remastering took the mixes to another level.

This is both Dan's chronologically first outing as leader and studio recording made in NYC.
Stay posted for further projects which are also due for release, spanning genres of hammond organ jazz, soul, hip-hop and experimental beats - featuring stellar performances from Jason Marshall, Jake Sherman, Les Cleveland, Nate Jones, Jovol Bell, Stacey Dillard, Russell & Rashawn Carter, Ondrej Pivec, Eli Sunderson, Kassa Overall, Derek Nievergeld and Capt Malik Work of The Real Live Show.
